The HWGC holds monthly meetings Wednesday evenings, September through May.
Selected meetings are open to the Community at Large while others are offered to membership only.

This year the HWGC is planning to hold in-person meetings, excepting January which will be a zoom meeting.

Dr. Nick Dorian is an ecologist, an educator, and a naturalist. He received his
Ph.D. from Tufts University where he studied the ecology and conservation of wild bees.

You’ve probably heard “Save The Bees!” but do you know which bees
need saving? Over 4000 species of bees inhabit North America, and most don’t live in
hives or make honey.
In fact, wild bees come in every size, shape, and color you can
imagine, and they live all around us, hiding in plain sight. In this lecture, Dr. Nick Dorian
will introduce you to the wild bees of New England. Together, we’ll examine their varied
lifestyles, habitat needs, and intricate relationships they have with native flowering
plants and other insects. You’ll come away with clear action items for how to notice,
appreciate, and help these important pollinators in your backyard.

Gretel Anspach, both a trustee of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and a LifetimeMaster Gardener with the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association, will be our speaker.

Lawns are imported garden fixtures for places with cool, wet summers. Here a “perfect” lawn is a major drain on water supplies, a source of pollution, and a lot of work. Look at options for tailoring your lawn and your lawn care to fit your needs, potentially eliminating hundreds of hours of labor and expensive treatments every year. The talk will include some discussion of alternatives to the traditional grass lawn.

Luncheon fee: $35. Watch for details and sign-up information in the January/February newsletter.

If you bring a plant, you can take a plant, and any leftover plants are for anyone.

This is the celebration when awards are given to some of our members for their
participation in the Club’s Design and Horticulture competitions and also to some of
those members who participated in outside standard flower shows (such as the Topsfield
Flower Show). You will also hear about potential in-house garden tours.

This has proven to be a special evening for fun conversation and a delicious meal. Watch
for details and sign-up information in the May/June newsletter.
